Casting Shadows Jacquelynn King
Casting Shadows is a playground for poetry to explore self-forgiveness in the face of familial trauma, grief, climate destruction, and male violence against women. In parallel, the poems investigate the immense beauty that co-exists with chaos. The speaker finds quiet moments with the self and her imagination. At times, accessing her inner child and bringing a voice to her past through the exploration of mind-altering experiences. Reckoning with her failures, she discovers that to proceed down the path of healing, she must stand witness to herself and the world around her. Each poem exists on a matrix that illuminates the interconnectedness between the self and the world, the body and breath, love and grief, motherhood and daughterhood, and the empirical and the spiritual. The collection raises questions about the power of choice and how a young woman chooses to use it.
